Meet Carolyn Martin, USCG — 2019 Veteran
Carolyn Martin is a Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) Program Coordinator who works with homeless and at-risk veterans and their families to achieve long-term stability through case management, referrals, and temporary financial assistance. The SSVF department is designed to house families quickly, assisting with referrals for financial education classes, legal counseling, employment services, and health care and veteran benefits assistance. The SSVF department also assists with temporary financial assistance for security deposits, utility deposits, rental assistance, utility payment assistance, moving expenses, childcare assistance, transportation, and emergency supplies for eligible veterans.
After nearly a decade of occupational, educational, and volunteering experience, Carolyn knows what is truly important for the veteran community in the Houston metropolitan area. The continued support from organizations, leaders and veterans alike help empower the communities' development and success.
Carolyn worked as a Boatswains Mate in the United States Coast Guard for 10 years, during which time she assisted with Hurricane Katrina recovery, aided Deepwater Horizon operations, conducted security operations during two presidential inaugurations in Washington D.C. and facilitated numerous presidential and military security zones. Carolyn specifically learned to operate and communicate effectively in diverse, high stress environments through her experience conducting search and rescue missions, law enforcement boardings and surface rescue swimmer operations.
Carolyn also completed two study abroad experiences in Oman and England, was the co-president of Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honors Society from 2016 to 2018 and was a member of the UHCL veteran student association, Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society and Model Arab League society. Carolyn was also the winner of two essay contests at the University of Houston-Clear Lake with her research studies on veterans.
Carolyn is currently a certified mediator in the state of Texas, holds a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology and a Bachelors of Science degree in Behavioral Science from the University of Houston-Clear Lake. She also conducted qualitative and quantitative research proposals and presented them at two national conferences on the analysis and evaluation of multiple veteran issues.
