Meet Specialist David Nuñez — 2015 Wounded Veteran

David Nuñez was born in Los Angeles, California and is the youngest of three children. He grew up in areas such as Stockton, Sacramento, and San Francisco. At the age of 13, David's family moved to El Paso, Texas. After graduating high school, he joined the U.S. Army as a 19D – Cavalry Scout.

After basic training in Fort Knox, Kentucky and then AIT, David was assigned a duty station in Fort Polk, Louisiana and was transferred to 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment. There he attended several training campaigns at the National Training Center in Fort Irvine, California. Towards the end of his enlistment, David was subject to stop loss and deployed to Iraq in April of 2003 and was a part of Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

David Nuñez went on several patrol and reconnaissance missions, cleared munitions from schools, conducted traffic checkpoints, guarded high radiation sites, and was also tasked to assist Special Forces with recon missions.

While on guard, his unit was attacked by AK-47s and grenades. He and his unit were able to defend their location and evacuate their NCO to the medics after his NCO received damage to his hand from the AK-47 fire.

David returned home in November, 2003. He has worked for The Department of Homeland Security with U.S. Customs and Border Protection as a border patrol agent and is currently working for Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation as a Bankruptcy Specialist. David is also an alumnus for the Wounded Warrior Project and the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes. David has a 10 year old son and a one month old girl.
