Meet Joe Harwell — 2014 Wounded Veteran
Joseph Harwell was born in January, 1969 in the Philippine's. He has a family history of both foreign and U.S. Military descent. After joining the military in 1988 his first tour of duty was Germany and later Ft. Riley, Kansas. He then deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in which he was attached to the XVIII Abn Corps. During one of the unit's missions the convoy in which Joseph was riding struck a mine field.
He was later med evac'ed to Landstuhl, Germany, Walter Reed hospital and finally BAMMC for recovery from these injuries.
After a long recovery and several surgeries Joseph, though physically recovered somewhat, still suffers from the traumatic and painful memories of those lost in his unit. He thanks his wife Amber for being by his side through the whole ordeal in opening the doors of opportunity for the treatments needed for recovery. Joseph is making connections through some wonderful programs in the area with the VA. Joseph currently resides with his wife and kids and now works for the government serving soldiers of today.
