Meet Specialist John Durrenberger — 2017 Veteran
John was born on 21 March, 1993 in Neptune Twp, New Jersey. He was raised 40 minutes North in a small town called Milltown, New Jersey. All through high school, John knew he wanted to serve his country.
The day he turned 18, he first witnessed what it felt like to jump from a perfectly good airplane. As graduation drew closer, John started looking at different branches of the military. During this search he was told by a recruiter he could continue to jump from airplanes and get paid for it. What better job is there then to be part of the U.S. Army Airborne?
John enlisted in the United States Army from 7 May 2012 to 14 September 2016. His original MOS was 11B1P Airborne Infantryman. John graduated OSUT in Fort Benning, Georgia then attended Airborne School just three short weeks later. For his first duty station, he was assigned to the 1-505 PIR 3 BCT 82nd Airborne Div as an Airborne Infantryman.
A bad jump on October 22, 2013 brought an immediate change to his career path. It resulted in his main parachute collapsing and his reserve parachute not opening. This led to a 100 foot freefall.
John then changed his MOS to 15R an Attack Apache Helicopter Repairer. John was stationed again at Fort Bragg North Carolina with the 82nd CAB, 1-82 ARB. After two years with the 82nd CAB, John was medically released with an Honorable Discharge and the rank of Specialist. John is now going to college full-time for Psychology. His goal is to open his own business for Veterans with PTSD. He truly believes in the saying, "No one fights alone."
