Meet HM3 (FMF) Matthew G. Cappella, USN — 2018 Veteran
Matthew was born on May 11th at Saint Peters Hospital in New Brunswick New Jersey. He grew up in Milltown and was active in his community. Prior to his service he was an active meber of Boy Scout Troop 33 where he attained the rank of eagle scout and was a volunteer EMT on the Miltown Rescue Squad where he took a special interest in emergency medicine.
After graduating high school he left for bootcamp on Septemeber 18th, 2011. Following completion of boot camp he attended Hospital Corpsman "A" school at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. HN Cappella then recieved orders to report to Field Medical Training Battalion aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendelton, California.
Upon completion of training he was then breifly assigned to 1st Marine Special operations Battalion where he was assigned as a general duty corpsman in Headquaters and Service Company. HN Cappella was then selected to execute orders to 1st Battalion 7th Marines located in Twentynine Palms, California on May of 2013. Arriving at 1/7 he was assigned to the scout sniper platoon for training for the upcoming deployment.
Prior to depolyment HN Cappella was sent to the Combat Trauma Medicine Course aboard Camp Pendelton as well as San Diego State University where he studied Afghan language and culture. He was then reassigned to 1/7 Baker Company 1st squad as a line corpsman. HN Cappella deployed on March of 2014 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom to Helmand Province Afghanistan where he was combat meritoriously promoted to Hospital Corpsman Third class.
While on deployment he also earned the Fleet Marine Force ground combat element warfare designator. Returning in September of 2014 his unit started training for another deployment. In June of 2015 HM3 Cappella was selected to attend the mountain medicine course at the Marine Corps Mountain Warefare school in Bridgeport, California.
Returning from the Course HM3 Cappella was then Assigned to 3rd battlion 4th Marines to assist with combat life saver training for the unit. HM3 Cappella was then transfered to Naval Hospital in Twentynine Palms due to a hip injury that required corrective surgury.
HM3 Cappella was honorably dischaged on Febuary 1, 2018. Some of his personal awards include the Navy And Marine Corps acievement medal, the combat action ribbon, two Good Conduct medals, Afghanistan Campaign medal, Sea Service Deployment medal, and Fleet Marine Force pin.
