Meet Randall Greeson — 2018 Veteran
Randy Greeson was born and raised in Smiths Station, Alabama. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on August 12, 2001. He attended and completed boot camp at Parris Island and Marine Combat Training at Camp Lejeune, followed by his primary MOS school to become a field radio operator. His first permanent duty station was with the 3rd Reconnaissance BN in Okinawa, Japan.
He was placed in the communications shop for a few months for additional training to prepare him for operating in a team environment. Shortly after completion of training he was moved to the senior platoon in Bravo Company B-1. He fulfilled the role of RTO for the recon team during workups and deployments for a few cycles.
The operation tempo slowed enough to allow him to attend Airborne school in FT. Benning, Georgia in February 2003, then the Basic Reconnaissance Course at Camp Pendleton, California in March of 2003. After completing this training he received a secondary MOS 0321.
Shortly after completion of the course a new platoon was formed in the BN where LCPL Greeson was moved to the new platoon in Alpha Company A-1 as team leader for TM 3. Later he resumed his role as the team's radio operator. After the platoon was established they deployed multiple times to countries around southeast Asia.
In late 2003 his platoon started their workup to deploy with the 31st MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit). Training courses were conducted by SOTG (Special Operations Training Group). His platoon soon afterward headed to Iraq along with the 31st MEU to replace the 2nd Recon in their area of operations.
Upon arrival in Iraq CPL Greeson's platoon took over 2nd recon's AO. The operations tempo remained high through numerous raids on high value targets and many other operations including Phantom Fury. He and his platoon were replaced after some delay by the rest of the battalion just short of a year in country.
