Meet Sergeant Ryan McIntosh — 2013 Wounded Veteran

Ryan McIntosh is a 24 year old Army Sergeant, husband and father of two children.

He was born in Midland, Texas in 1988. After graduating from Rifle High School in Rifle, Colorado, he went to Mesa State University for 2 years. Then decided he just wasn't ready to let go of his dream of serving his country. In April of 2010 he went to basic training in Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon graduation he was stationed in Colorado Springs with 1/66th Armor of 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry division.

In October 2010, he received orders for his first combat tour to Afghanistan. Just two months into his first deployment on December 8, 2010, while conducting a foot patrol, a pressure plate landmine detonated beneath him. After being medevac'd to Kandahar Air Field, doctors did an emergency amputation of Ryan's right leg below the knee.

Within a week of having his leg amputated he was transported to Brooke Army Medical Facility, in San Antonio, Texas. There he met his pregnant wife, and family. Only two short months after McIntosh's leg was amputated he started learned to walk again on a prosthetic leg.

Currently, Ryan is putting together his application to become a World Class Athlete for the Army as a runner. His main events will be the 100m and 200m sprint. While in the program Ryan plans to obtain a degree in Sports Management.
